The University of Winnipeg, located in the heart of Treaty One Territory and the traditional homelands of the Métis Nation, is an urban, primarily undergraduate institution. The Faculty of Education offers a five-year integrated Bachelor of Education (BEd) program, a two-year after-degree BEd program, a BA in Developmental Studies, a Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Education (PBDE) for in-service teachers, a graduate program in Marriage and Family Therapy, and Access Education Programs.
The Practicum Coordinator is a full-time continuing role responsible for recruiting and advising prospective students maintaining regular correspondence and follow-up with internal and external contacts, and for supporting future and new undergraduate students in making informed decisions about their applications. The successful candidate will also coordinate practicums by organizing student placements to ensure they align with program requirements and provide meaningful field experiences.
Responsibilities:
- Strengthen relationships with school divisions, Indigenous education authorities, and community organizations.
- Collaborate with divisions to expand the division-directed placement models and facilitate long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships.
- Leads and supports initiatives that advance Reconciliation and cultural responsiveness in teacher education.
- Oversee and advance professional learning opportunities focusing on portfolio development, hiring preparation, and professional readiness.
- Coordinates, administers, and supports student teaching placements across Winnipeg and surrounding school divisions, including rural, northern, and international contexts.
- Actively participates in internal committees and represents the University externally.
- Responsible for coordinating and assessing practicum learning outcomes to ensure coherence and consistency across programs.
- Oversee and support planning for participation in the annual WestCAST conference.
- Provides prospective students with accurate and appropriate information about the University’s academic programs, course offerings and degree requirements, on both an individual and group basis.
- Responds to inquiries in person, on the phone and via email and social media.
- Evaluates courses from other institutions to determine their equivalency to program requirements.
- Manages sensitive, confidential information when advising and referring students
- May be involved in the selection process for limited enrolment programs.
- Consults with certification bodies from other provinces or countries.
- Participates in internal committees and events.
- Creates and delivers multiple orientations to prospective, returning and new students.
- Serves as primary advisor to incoming students, providing guidance on academic requirements and related matters.
- Provides guidance and resources to student teachers navigating placements, professional expectations, and reflective practice.
- Supports the professional growth of students through initiatives promoting teacher identity, community engagement, and experiential learning.
- Develops and facilitates information sessions to highlight the Faculty of Education experience and advantages to positively influence prospective students.
- Delivers information sessions held on campus or in secondary schools, community colleges, other universities and convention/conference facilities.
- Maintains thorough knowledge of the Faculty of Education programs, admission procedures, facilities, student services and unique selling points. Update information on relevant websites, engage in social media promotion.
- Facilitates travel arrangements associated with student recruitment.
- Participates in online information sessions.
- Coordinates promotional materials to ensure effective delivery of pertinent information to prospective students.
- Attends recruitment events promoting international practicum programs.
- Maintains records to track and follow-up on potential leads, providing motivation and encouragement to potential students as appropriate
- Monitors and reports on weekly activities.
- Conducts research and prepare statistics/other reports that are in line with the current trends in post-secondary.
- Drafts summary reports at the end of the travel seasons.
- Administers Faculty of Education social media accounts and plans social media campaigns and posts.
Qualifications:
- Undergraduate degree in a related discipline is required (B.Ed. degree preferred)
- At least three years of directly related academic advising experience, including experience delivering presentations and orientations, along with demonstrated ability to lead complex partnerships with school divisions, international partners, community organizations, northern and rural communities.
- Knowledge of the relating policies and procedures of the unit.
- Knowledge of procedures and practices in the fields of personnel, budgeting or accounting, may be required.
- Knowledge of principles and techniques for effective office administration.
- A deep understanding of culturally responsive, inclusive, and reflective practices in teacher preparation.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational abilities and demonstrated abilities to plan, coordinate and establish work priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to make sound independent decisions and demonstrate problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to prepare reports and informational materials.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various levels of internal and external contacts
- Ability to use specialized software packages for statistical analysis, graphic design, word processing, and web content development.
- Ability to supervise other employees.
- Experience organizing professional conferences or large-scale educational events
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Able to travel for recruitment events and conferences as required.
- Able to work occasional evenings for events and workshops.
The salary range for this position will be from $52,579.80 to $74,729.20 annually.
Note: The work described in this posting will be conducted in-person, with an opportunity to apply for Remote Work for up to two (2) days per week, with fully in person work required during peak periods, while traveling, or to support events.
