Foundations in Biology I

Compensation

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.

  • Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate – $22.07 per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2024)
  • Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate – $34.73 per hour. (Rate effective September 1, 2024)

Duties

Reporting to the Department Chair or Course Instructor, the duties and responsibilities of the Course Coordinator will be in accordance with Article 22.04 of the Collective Agreement.

Responsibility 1:

  • Manage waitlists and overrides into courses, as required
  • Manage requests to switch lab sections
  • Coordinate and administer make-up exams
  • Correspond with students who have missed laboratories, assignments, test, exams and assisting in the coordination of make-up assessments, as approved by the course instructor and/or senior demonstrator
  • Work with Brightspace (or other online learning system) and Gradebook (or similar) to update and manage course grades, as required
  • Academic Misconduct-Maxient

Responsibility 2:

  • Liaise with Student Academic Services (SAS) and course instructors to coordinate academic accommodations relating to individual students
  • Communicate with SAS as required to contest individual student complaints regarding accommodations. This individual in this position will ‘represent’ the department in cases escalating to higher levels.

Responsibility 3:

  • Maintain familiarity with existing provincial and university regulations around academic accommodations
  • Liaise with Senior Demonstrators, Faculty, and staff to maintain awareness of changes in policies affecting them

Responsibility 4:

  • Liaise with Student Health Services as needed to intervene in serious mental health issues affecting individual students, particularly those with the potential for self-harm
  • Deal with vaccination, masking, and related issues to ensure students are aware of regulations and policies. Intervene when required to refer non-compliance issues to university authorities
  • Follow up to verify medical documentation or claims preventing students from completing assessments

Responsibility 5:

  • Collect anonymous data relating to numbers and types of accommodations and undertake basic data analysis to track trends
  • Identify problem areas and propose solutions

Qualifications

Safety is a major issue in these labs and the incumbent must be able to detect potential hazards and have the ability and skills to rapidly and appropriately deal with problems as they occur.

Education:

  • Successful completion of a BSc; Master’s degree preferred
  • Peer mentorship training
  • experience delivering online labs

Prior Experience:

  • Have a basic knowledge of how biology laboratories, assignments, papers, test, and exams are conducted in the department
  • Be familiar with the Department of Biological Sciences commitment to upholding academic rigour, as defined by course instructors and the department
  • Be able to work with online learning systems
  • Be able to identify and respond to mental health crises by alerting appropriate university, or other, personnel
  • Work within a team

Knowledge (know how, specific skills):

  • Solid computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, Sakai, web applications, social media, internet search engines, graphics, video editing
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Excellent writing, grammar, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, listening and comprehension skills

Human Relation Skills:

  • Effective organizational, time management and communication skills
  • Communicate well with all department faculty and staff to maintain the academic standards set out by individual instructors for all courses
  • Ability to interact with persons from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently in a supportive and collaborative manner, and as part of a team
  • Ability to establish priorities, organize own work, and work with minimal supervision

Problem Solving, Analysis & Innovation:

  • Ability to research, learn, teach, train and disseminate knowledge.
  • Demonstrate willingness to learn and a high level of self-motivation and autonomy.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Demonstrated professionalism and effectiveness.
  • Knowledge of student engagement trends, post-secondary best practices
